Peter Sagan Faces Challenges in Final Months as Road Cyclist

Peter Sagan is in his last months as a road cyclist. But they don’t run smoothly.

On Wednesday it became known that Sagan was caught on May 12 at 11:35 am with 3.36 promille in his blood, which is between 15 to 20 glasses of beer. Sagan was parking his scooter in Monaco at the time when two officers spotted him.

The Slovak was suspended for three months in prison and also has to do without a driver’s license for three months. In a video on Instagram, Sagan apologized.

“I am very sorry that I messed up in a moment of weakness. I want to apologize to my family and friends, my team, the sponsors and everyone who supports me. I want to learn from this and become a better person.”

Sven Nys sees it as yet another sign of Slovak decline. “Peter Sagan brought Rock & Roll into the race and that was cool. Only the strings have jumped off his guitar in recent years. Such a shame and painful to see a top athlete struggle like that.”
