Mourinho is sanctioned with four games for harassing Taylor, referee of the Europa League final

The UEFA announced the punishment against Jose Mourinho, Roma coach, for his reaction after losing the Europa League final against Sevilla. In a statement, the highest body of European football resolves to “suspend the coach for the next four UEFA club competition matches in which he would otherwise participate.” The reason for the sanction is “directing abusive language at the main referee of the match.” He is referring to the English referee Anthony Taylor, whom the Portuguese waited for in the car park.

“A fucking shame”

After losing on penalties against Sevilla, Mourinho was very critical of the performance of the English referee in the press conference after the Europa League final that Mendilibar’s team won in the penalty shootout. During the 90 minutes and extra time, the Portuguese was very active on the wing.

After the final, the Portuguese coach was caught in the stadium parking lot directing his anger at the refereeing team, saying that it had been “a fucking shame”. As part of his ‘show’, the Portuguese threw the runner-up medal to the public. “I do not accept these medals”, assured.

Mourinho: “The referee seems Spanish”

The Roma coach gave several examples of what he considered to be Taylor’s wrong decisions. “It is enough to look at Ibáñez’s mouth and you understand everything, to see Lamela who has taken a penalty and should have been sent off; it is enough to see that the team that played the best in the first half is the one that has finished with three yellow. Pellegrini falls and it is yellow, Ocampos simulates and there is no yellow“.

All this led Mourinho to say that “The referee seemed Spanish with so many yellow cards.” The Portuguese spent a large part of his appearance denouncing what he considered the double standards of his first lost European grand final. “When he had to take the second from Lamela, he didn’t take it. And then he scored one of the penalties. It’s an injustice,” insisted the Roma coach, who failed to win his second continental tournament after winning of the Conference League.

Multiple sanctions against Roma

For this reason, the Disciplinary Commission of the European body accused the Portuguese coach of “insulting/abusive language against a match official” The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body also fined Roma 50,000 euros and prohibits the team from selling tickets to its visiting fans for the next match in competition organized by UEFA. The reason for this sanction is “to light fireworks, throw objects and create disturbances in the stands”.

In addition, it imposes other 5,000 euros for improper conduct of the Italian team. Finally, UEFA urges Roma “to contact the Hungarian Football Federation within 30 days” to repair the damage caused by the Italian ‘tiffosi’. Specifically, it refers to “the broken bins, plugs and broken seats in the stadium of the final”, the Puskas Arena Stadium.
