Moroccan Athletes Shine at the Special Olympics World Games, Winning 11 Medals

The Moroccan champions, taking part in the 16th edition of the World Summer Games “Special Olympics World Games”, which is held from June 17 to 25 in Berlin, won until Saturday, 11 medals in different sports disciplines.

According to a press release from Special Olympics Morocco (SOM), the Moroccan delegation signs a brilliant participation in this edition, with a provisional balance sheet showing 11 medals including three in gold, five in silver and three in bronze.

The three gold medals were won by Ayoub Salhi (boccia), El Mehdi Chouib (equestrian) and Abir Aït Drai (badminton), the statement said, noting that the silver medals went to the men’s national team of football, the pair Farah Diwan and Abir Aït Drai (badminton), Saida El Amrani (judo), Omar El Omari (swimming) and Salwa Bouzrik (athletics/shot put).

As for the bronze medals, they were won by Lamiae Akdim (golf), Ayoub El Ouali Alami (tennis) and Farah Diwan (badminton), adds the same source.

+ Girls (23) and boys (23) parity +

Morocco is participating in the 16th edition of the Special Olympics World Summer Games with 46 athletes. While ensuring parity between girls (23) and boys (23), Special Olympics Morocco represents the Kingdom in 12 sports disciplines, namely: athletics, boccia, badminton, table tennis, swimming, horse riding, cycling, tennis, judo, golf, football and basketball.

The Special Olympics Morocco delegation also takes part in the parallel projects program. These aim to promote the health, leadership and autonomy of people with intellectual disabilities.

On the sidelines of sports competitions, the national delegation participates in the Global Youth Leadership Summit, which brings together young people with and without disabilities from all over the world, within a single global leadership platform, in order to develop together the skills they have need to become agents of change in their communities.

Special Olympics Morocco is a sports training and competition program for athletes with intellectual disabilities. It was created in October 1994, by the late Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Amina. (MAP)
