Mexico’s men’s soccer team scored a convincing victory in the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Gold Cup match between Canada and the United States on Sunday.
Mexico defeated Honduras 4-0 (2-0) in Houston in the first match of Sub-Group B.
At the end of the first minute, Luis Romo put Mexico in the lead with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area. In the middle of the first half, the “Monterrey” midfielder headed the ball into the goal after a corner and made it 2-0. In the 52nd minute of the game, after breaking into the penalty area, Orvelin Pineda strengthened the advantage of the Mexican national team, and in the 64th minute, Luis Chavez executed an accurate shot from about 12 meters – 4:0.
Just a week ago, Diego Koka was sacked as Mexico’s head coach, replaced by Jaime Losano, after a devastating loss in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals.
In the second game of subgroup B, Haiti beat Qatar, which was invited to the tournament, with a score of 2:1 (1:1). In the 20th minute, Yusuf Abdurisag made it 1:0 for Qatar, but during the compensation of the first half, Dakens Nazon realized a 11-meter penalty kick and equalized the result. Haiti won the victory in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, when Frenzday Piero scored unhindered from in front of the goal to make it 2-1.
On the other hand, in subgroup A in Fort Lauderdale, Trinidad and Tobago defeated Saint Kitts and Nevis 3:0 (1:0). Elvin Jones and Ajani Fortune scored for the winners, and Jameel Ible put the ball into his own goal. The USA played to a 1-1 draw with Jamaica in this sub-group on Saturday.
The CONCACAF Gold Cup is held every two years. This year it will take place in the USA and Canada from June 24 to July 16. In 2021, the USA national team became the winners of the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the seventh time in history, beating the previous champion Mexico 1:0 in the final. Only three national teams have won the tournament so far – Mexico has eight titles, USA – seven, and Canada – one.
