Mark van Bommel and Antwerp Prepare for the Challenge of a New Season

The title rush has not yet gotten out of his mind and Mark van Bommel has to sharpen his team again for the upcoming goals. The Dutch choice lord of Antwerp is looking forward to a new season, but realizes that it will be quite a challenge. “It is up to us to make the step to the top club now,” he says.

Antwerp and trainer Mark van Bommel confess: the title rush is not quite over yet.

“What have we all experienced in those final weeks …”, laughs the T1. “I have become champion before, but not in that way. You don’t just shake that off.

“Wherever you are – on the beach or in the city, even in Spain on holiday – you are called to account after the 4th of June. It means that you have created something unique. And that it has gone around Europe.”

After such a title denouement you are always lost for a while.

Mark Van Bommel

To let last season’s (already early) nostalgia reign again, the Dutchman talks about how much he enjoyed Alderweireld’s goal.

“Now I no longer watch it every day, but in the week after the title I saw videos everywhere,” he smiles. “Once from different angles or with music underneath.” Was our version on repeat with the coach?

The players are also clearly enjoying the moment. “It is also not possible that you start training now and can close everything. You are always lost for a while.”

“You have to give your boys time to process everything, but they have to train with concentration.”

Step towards top club

The knob must be turned quickly. Antwerp defends the title and is cup holder. In addition, the Supercup and the preliminary round of the Champions League are also imminent.

No evidence according to Van Bommel, who does not just count The Great Old among the top clubs in Belgium after a farmer’s year.

“We all have to take the step towards a top club. We are already regarded that way, after the double. Whether that is realistic remains the question.”

“You don’t just become a top club. We have to be better this season, because everyone wants to beat you. We have to take on that challenge and learn from it very quickly.”

Antwerp and I intend to continue working together.

Mark Van Bommel

There are no guarantees of new success.

A guarantee: Mark van Bommel absolutely wants to continue working at Stamnummer 1. He therefore brings up a remarkable – but not entirely correct – statistic to indicate the uncertainty in his sector.

“How many trainers are left after the start of last season, with 18 clubs? I think 2: Wouter Vrancken and me.” And Marc Brys and Hein Vanhaezebrouck, he is being improved.

“I told you so, 2 times 2”, the Dutchman laughs with it. “So you see how fast it goes.”

“I still have a contract until next year, so I’m not going anywhere. We’ve talked to each other and so we intend to continue working together.”

Ready for a new season full of success?
