Manchester City (finally) win Champions League despite De Bruyne injury, Lukaku mourns after crucial miss | UEFA Champions League 2022/2023

Unlike two years ago, Pep Guardiola did not reflect on his choices in Istanbul. Yet City in Turkey acted unrecognizable before halftime.

It counted on conductor Kevin De Bruyne to break through the Italian ranks, but just like in 2021, this CL final also ended early for City’s turntable due to an injury.

With him between the lines, City decorated before half-time as the only opportunities worthy of the name. Erling Braut Haaland and KDB themselves both couldn’t get past Andre Onana.

Only after the break did we get to see the real City at times. Then Bernardo Silva after a smooth combination once reached the back line, the ball just fell at the feet of Rodri. He did not hesitate and aimed the 1-0 bone dry in goal.

The hardest part was done for City, who then failed to finish the game completely. Substitute Phil Foden dribbled himself face to face with Onana, but failed to finish.

The substitute Romelu Lukaku also claimed a leading role shortly before. First he kept teammate Dimarco from 1-1 with an unfortunate block, after which he himself shot hard at Ederson not much later.

Two minutes before time, the worst moment came for the striker of the Red Devils. He just blandly headed at Ederson from three feet away.

Gone Champions League for Inter, Manchester City and De Bruyne have their first cup with the big ears.

The invested billions and hundreds of breaches of financial rules? In Istanbul it was snowed under by golden confetti.
