Roland-Garros: after a fierce fight against Muchova, Iga Swiatek offers a third coronation

There was a match and what a match! But the Polish Iga Swiatek finally won the final of the French Open women’s draw as expected. It took more than two hours and forty minutes of games for the world number 1 to overcome the 43rd player in the WTA rankings. The great adventure of the Czech Karolina Muchova, surprise and surprising guest of the final stopped on the last step. Already winner of the tournament in 2020 behind closed doors at Covid then last year against Coco Gauff, the 22-year-old Polish woman did not give the 26-year-old Czech a chance. However, the game was much more contested than expected.

If Muchova had a desire for exploits when entering the court, Swiatek immediately tells her who is the boss of the circuit. The Polish in the cap takes her opponent’s service straight away. In the first set, Muchova failed to get out of the grip of the best player in the world. The latter suffocates the Czech in the first set won 6-2 in about thirty minutes. The second set is much more undecided.

In red and black, Muchova fights not to feed regrets. She finally enters her match, her first Grand Slam final. Pushed by the public who still have a weakness for the “Poulidor”, despite being down 3-0, she takes the service of Swiatek to come back to 3-3 then 4-4 before taking the lead at 5-4. In white outfit à la Chris Evert, who will give him the Suzanne-Lenglen cup, Swiatek is scared. And the match becomes spectacular. Muchova served for the win of the set which she won 7-5.

Ball in the center for the third inning. Muchova starts it by leading 2-0. But Swiatek comes back without apparent panic to 2-2 before leading 3-2. The two girls go blow for blow. Muchova seems to take the decisive advantage. She serves to lead 5-3 but Swiatek hangs on, comes back, leads 5-4 before winning, on a double fault from the Czech, at the end of the suspense 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

The question now is how many titles in Paris will Iga Swiatek collect in future years? In 5 participations since 2018, she has already triumphed 3 times and she does not seem to have an opponent to her measure on the center court. She is mostly only 22 years old. She is gone to last a long time. We will see again at Roland-Garros the big fan of Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and…Rafael Nadal. And we will most likely see her again in the final.
