Luxury tax: Monaco plans to play with two separate teams in Euroleague and Betclic Elite

While AS Monaco could be fined 2 to 2.5 million euros during the 2023-2024 season under the implementation of a luxury tax by the National Basketball League (LNB), the leaders of the Roca Team plan to play with two separate teams in Euroleague and Betclic Elite according to Basket News.

In a few days, on June 6, the LNB should decide on the introduction of a luxury tax aimed at sanctioning clubs with a gross payroll of more than 8.5 million euros from next season. . If adopted, then each additional euro spent above this threshold would be taxed between 70 and 80 cents.

Thus, AS Monaco, the biggest payroll of the season in Betclic Elite (10.7 million euros gross for the 2022-2023 financial year), could be forced to pay more than 2 million euros per year, even up to 2.5 million euros if it plans to settle around 12 million payroll. Monegasque leaders are seriously considering the possibility of setting up a B team composed mainly of local players in order to play Betclic Elite matches and not register its foreign players in the LNB list, according to Basket News.

« Especially since these additional millions, which AS Monaco would most likely have to compensate out of the owners’ pocket, could potentially result in Euroleague sanctions under Financial Fair Play regulations if the owners’ financial involvement in club budget exceeds 50% “, adds the media.

A case that will not fail to react while the team of Sasa Obradovic leads 2-0 against JL Bourg in the semi-finals of Betclic Elite and that it will try to conquer in June its first title of champion of France.
