Human Resources, the first dam of Artificial Intelligence – El Sol de México

The Human Resources (HR) departments of companies are the most vulnerable areas to be replaced by the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs 2023 report, while technology will drive business transformation, 14 million white-collar jobs will be lost over the next five years, with clerical and secretarial functions hardest hit.

“What the Human Resources area does are very repetitive processes and Artificial Intelligence will help companies to have faster processes and with less margin for error,” said Rogelio Segovia, PhD in Philosophy and founder of Human Leader, in an interview. .

In Mexico, there are already companies such as Soriana or Nowports that have adopted technologies to reduce duplication in administrative areas, added Segovia.

According to the World Economic Forum report, 44 percent of skills will become obsolete for workers in the next five years in all fields. This is due to the fact that a large part of the population does not have the economic resources or the necessary skills to acquire new skills or develop personally.

For Segovia, it is not surprising that the Human Resources area is one of the first to disappear with the implementation of Artificial Intelligence, since this area is not considered crucial in the strategy of organizations.

“For managers, Human Resources do not add value to the organization and its processes are repetitive. If now a technology is going to come along that makes it cheaper and faster, welcome.”

An example of this was the recent decision by the multinational technology company IBM, which suspended hiring worldwide with the aim of replacing approximately 7,800 jobs with Artificial Intelligence. Arvind Krishna, CEO of IBM, mentioned that the replacement of people by AI will take place mainly in areas that are not customer-facing, such as in the case of Human Resources.

LESS HUMAN CONTACT IN COMPANIES

As more companies choose to replace workplaces with AI, such as IBM, concerns are being raised about how this could affect the relationship between the organization and its people.

“I am concerned that companies are replacing many processes, especially those involving workers, with automated chatbots, making human contact a new luxury. So, the question is: is the client more important than the collaborator?” commented Rogelio Segovia.

For the founder of Human Leader, companies must make sure they listen to their employees, maintain direct and human contact with them, instead of relying solely on bots.

In the case of employees, Dr. Segovia recommends getting on the wave of Artificial Intelligence, understanding it, beginning to master it as one more tool in our favour.

“Artificial Intelligence is not going to come to take away our jobs, but it is going to come to take away a person who knows how to use it.”
