New Beginnings and Record Numbers: Salvadoran Archers Prepare for 2024 Pan American Championships

Before the colorful landscape of the 21 flags of the nations that fly at the Jorge Jiménez Archery Range of the Merliot Sports Complex, the 238 athletes carried out official training prior to the start of competitions at the 2024 Pan American Youth and Master Championships.

This competition marks the debut as a coach of Sofía Paiz, an athlete who belongs to the Effort and Glory Program of the National Sports Institute of El Salvador (INDES). Serenity, focus and precision are some of the characteristics that Paiz transmits to her pupils in the U15 and U18 categories.

“It is a great responsibility to transmit to them that confidence, the knowledge that I have accumulated over the years and to be able to teach it in a week to the best of my ability. Something very important is how to control your nerves and focus on the moment of being on the line. I think they have a great chance of learning a lot even though they have a fairly slow process, since they have lacked equipment throughout the process, up to this point we have managed to get them support but I believe that they are going to give their best effort,” he commented.

Given the opportunity to learn from the filming of Paiz, the U15 compound bow athlete, Camila Merino, took the opportunity to express her emotions about it and also about the opportunity to join the Salvadoran delegation, achievements that she considers fruits of her work and persistence in shooting. with bow

“Training with Sofía is a great experience and it feels very good because she supports us a lot. Every time I do something wrong, she immediately tells me where I’m going wrong and helps me improve. For this event I have prepared by training morning and afternoon to give my best in each arrow and it is also nice because it gives us the opportunity to meet new people, make friends, exchange opinions and interact,” she added.

For Roberto Hernández, manager and coach of the Salvadoran Archery Federation, it is an achievement to host this international event, as he assures that the influx of athletes exceeded that of the last edition held in 2012.

Hernández considered that hosting the San Salvador 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games was a good opportunity to promote sport and the country’s sports infrastructure.

“In the end, including delegates and athletes, we have an average of 340 people. We broke a record in a Pan American event of these categories, obviously San Salvador 2023 has a lot to do with it, the level of security in the country and the tourism that is being printed, that generates a different climate for the development of our country,” he shared.
