DENVER — Mounds of hailstones and flash flooding on the dugout steps created a wild scene before the game kicked off late Thursday afternoon at Coors Field, delaying time.
In the hours leading up to Game 1 between the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers, a layer of hail covered the tarp-protected field as bad weather hit Metro Denver.
Club attendant Casey Williams, far right, uses a bucket to collect a mixture of water and hail in front of the dugout doors at Coors Field on June 29, 2023.
The hail accumulation was so significant that a dugout worker made a show of shoveling loads of hailstones away from the dugout entrance.
The first show was delayed to just before 6:00pm as field staff continued the cleanup.
In what could not have been a comforting experience, catcher Rocky Elias Diaz slipped on the field tarp, dropping a layer of small hailstones.
