17 months after the 2024 edition of the Marathon Masters World Championship is held, for athletes over 35 years of age, from this Thursday the four members of the Evaluation Commission are in Gran Canaria to select the final venue, in a bid in which there are also the cities of Pescara, in Italy, Bucharest (Romania) and Sydney (Australia).
Leading the German Margit Jungman, president of the World Marathon Athletics Master (WMMA), this commission is made up of the Mexican Juan Ordóñez, secretary, the historic Scottish athlete Archie Jenkins, manager of the aforementioned organization, to which is added the everlasting director of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation, Fernando Marquina, who is the initial link with the Canary Islands institutions and the company DG Eventos, who opts for the organization of this world championship, which would be framed in the fourth edition of the Gran Canaria Maspalomas Marathon , which will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
This WMMA commission is analyzing the conditions, quality of the route, services for marathon runners, accommodation, transportation, etc., to decide over the next month if Gran Canaria is finally the chosen venue.
On the morning of this Thursday, apart from starting the tour of the circuit and other facilities through which the entire organizational framework of this world master’s degree would take place, the members of the commission held a meeting at the headquarters of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria with the president Antonio Morales, who reiterated the support of the island corporation for this event, as he had already shown his support through a letter three months ago.
The president of the cabildicio praised the level of the companies that organize sporting events on the Island and valued the interest of the institution in carrying out sports events that enhance the tourism and sport binomial.
On this point he coincided with the president Margit Jungman, who emphasized the profile of the athlete of master age who seeks to participate in competitions that also have a plus of relaxation and tourism as is the case of the island of Gran Canaria.
Until 2018, this marathon test of the master category was included in the master outdoor world championships, but the special conditions required to organize an event of these characteristics determined that it had to leave that environment and become a special test within a marathon that is already running and the one that is held in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana has its options for the final election.
