Wembanyama, 19 years old and with remarkable abilities, was the favorite of the ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, in the city of New York.

Upon hearing his name, the Frenchman emotionally hugged his family and took the stage to be presented with his new team’s cap by Commissioner Adam Silver, amid great enthusiasm in the stands.

“I just achieved something I’ve dreamed of all my life,” Wembanyama said with tears in his eyes. “I dreamed of this a lot; I have to cry,” he said emotionally.

With agility, ball handling and outside shooting that are hard to believe for someone his size, Wembanyama enters the NBA with the highest expectations since a teenager named LeBron James took that place in 2003.

Wembanyama will now face the challenge of reviving a very different Spurs team from the triumphant days of Frenchman Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and “Manu” Ginóbili.

The team led by Greg Popovich has been slowly rebuilding for five years and was last ranked in the West last season.

After the long-awaited choice of the pivot, the draft continued with the Hornets choosing forward Brandon Miller, the third choice was point guard Scoot Henderson for the Portland Trail Blazers, and then the twins Amen (Houston Rockets) and Ausar Thompson (Detroit) were chosen. Pistons), who at 20 are the first brothers to enter a top 10 draft.
