France Clinches Bronze in Dominant Victory over Hungary at Women’s EuroBasket 2023

This time, the Blue held their rank. Opposed to Hungary in the small final of the Women’s EuroBasket 2023, France easily won to obtain the bronze medal (82-68). It’s a consolation prize for a team that was aiming higher, after five finals played in a row in the competition. Serious, the Habs quickly got their hands on the game and, apart from a small drop in speed in the third quarter, were never really worried in this part. Mamignan Touré, on fire on winning shots (6/7), finished as the match’s top scorer (20 points).

An air pocket that costs a final: “We only played half-time”

Les Bleues got off to a bad start in the semi-final against Belgium? It was quite the opposite against Hungary. At the end of the first quarter, they already had an 18-point lead, enough to put themselves in the best position to obtain a good result. They were still able to count on an iron defense, preventing the Hungarians from having access to the circle and forcing them to take complicated shots. They have also had a lot of success in the offensive phases, which has not always been the case in this EuroBasket 2023. Success has been there (52.5% in shooting, and 57% at three points ) and the rebound was well managed (36 to 34).

France was imperial

Asphyxiated and without any real solution, Hungary never really recovered from the 15-0 run they suffered in the first period (49-30 for France). There was still a burst of pride after the break. The Hungarians then took advantage of a slight physical decline in the opposing camp, allowing them to put more pace on their possessions. Thanks to a slightly more regulated sight, they were even able to win the quarter with a score of 19 to 12. The French could have started to doubt, but we felt that they wanted to conclude the EuroBasket on an excellent note.

Dominating inside, both on the defensive and offensive phases, intractable at three points and applied on the throw line (16 out of 22, or 72.7%), France really made the match they needed . The contribution from the bench was also invaluable, like the 13 points from Iliana Rupert, who was making her comeback on the floor after a shoulder injury. In the starting five, Alexia Chartereau was very applied (10 points, 6 rebounds). For her last match played as part of a EuroBasket, Sandrine Gruda was more discreet (1 point, 0 out of 4 in shooting). Whatever, it will be one more bronze medal for the best scorer in the history of Les Bleues.
