Dominican Basketball Player Oscar Cabrera Adames Dies of Heart Attack After COVID-19 Vaccine, Raises Concerns Over Myocarditis

Dominican basketball player Oscar Cabrera Adames died of a heart attack during an effort test on Thursday.

Suffering from myocarditis, the athlete thought he developed it after receiving two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine.

In the social media comment that came to the fore after his death, Adames said, “Myocarditis occurred after I had the vaccine. I knew this. Many people warned me.” The 28-year-old basketball player continued his words as follows:

Vaccination was mandatory or I wouldn’t be able to work. I am an international professional athlete and I play in Spain. I have no health problems, nothing, nothing hereditary, no asthma, nothing. In the middle of a match, I suddenly collapsed to the ground and nearly died. I’m still in recovery and had 11 different cardiology tests and guess what? They couldn’t find anything.

Adames collapsed and was hospitalized during a game played in the Spanish Amateur Basketball League in December 2021.

The Mayo Clinic stressed that the exertion test is designed to show how the heart works during physical activity. During the test, electrodes are attached to the chest of the person in question. Thus, the electrical activity of the heart is recorded.

It is not known whether the exertion test directly triggered Adames’ heart attack.

Myocarditis, known as inflammation of the middle layer of the heart wall, can cause symptoms such as chest pain, difference in heart rate, respiratory problems, swelling in the feet or legs, and joint pain. This condition can weaken the heart and impair its ability to pump blood.

Research published in peer-reviewed scientific journals has shown that Covid-19 vaccines can rarely cause myocarditis.

It is known that the risk of myocarditis is higher especially in young men. Researchers found that 12-17-year-old men had a 450 per 1 million risk of developing myocarditis in the three months after Covid-19.

The US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices determined that men of the same age had a 67 per 1 million risk of developing myocarditis after receiving a second dose of mRNA vaccine.

According to experts, however, catching Covid-19 is more likely than vaccines to cause serious side effects such as myocarditis.
