FRISCO, Texas — A new face heads into the Dallas Cowboys locker room as the team nears the end of its mandatory minicamp. But he’s not someone they’re completely unaware of, considering he played at a nearby university.
Ben Banogu, a defensive end who found his way to the NFL as a second-round pick out of TCU, was signed to the Cowboys’ roster Wednesday.
He joins a loaded defensive line that continues to add talent on the edges, and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is intrigued with what Banogu could bring to training camp as a two-time First Team All-Big 12 honors player.
Originally from Nigeria, the former Horned Frog was drafted by the Colts in 2019, where he has played ever since, at least before Quinn and head coach Mike McCarthy brought him to Dallas this summer.
Banogu joins a group of quarterback rushers headlined by Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence … And a position that doesn’t lack immediate depth when you factor in the best season of Dorance Armstrong’s career in 2022, the comeback of Dante Fowler and the anticipated progress of former second-round pick Sam Williams.
However, Banogu’s skill set that can draw a lot of attention in training camp is evident when watching videos from his college days in Fort Worth. If he can get going when the team lands in Oxnard, Calif., he’ll make an already good position battle even more exciting.
