A JCW trio rocks the Ruhrgames

Phil Cabecana inspires on international terrain.

Wermelskirchen. Venray is considered the stronghold of judo. Traditionally, one of the largest youth tournaments in Europe takes place there, in Holland. In order to assert oneself there, a special sporting quality is required. This is exactly what a young athlete from JC Wermelskirchen demonstrated in an impressive way a few days ago.

Phil Cabecana ended the big tournament as a winner and deservedly celebrated. In the impressive atmosphere, the huge talent made short work of all his fights and won all fights within a few seconds. He literally marched through the competition in his weight class.

That was the case with his three clashes in the preliminary round. Then – in the semifinals – Phil Cabecana won early with a tactical feint. As if that could hardly be topped, he finished the final within just twelve seconds for himself with the special technique Uchimata. The reward: the most precious metal of his young career in the truest sense of the word.

Training comrade Leopold Harms supported the winner with all his might from the edge of the mat. He himself had caught a tough fate and was eliminated after two defeats.

Other young judokas from the JCW didn’t have to travel that far. A trio took part in the Ruhrgames in the Duisburg landscape park. Carolin Scheida was on the hunt for medals right from the start and after six victories, she deservedly took home the gold from the nationwide viewing tournament. It was silver for Hannah Glauner in her first U17 year. The day before she had already won gold at the German Mixed Team Championships.

The competition was (still) too strong for Ida von Grünberg. She left after two defeats. on
