Werder Bremen notes against Union Berlin: One note 2 – a 5!

Werder individual review

By Björn Knips and Malte Bürger

Niklas Stark had a lot to do in the SV Werder Bremen game against Union Berlin, but was the best Bremen player – grade 2.5.

Werder Bremen lost the last Bundesliga game of the season 0-1 against Union Berlin. The players in the individual review – with grades.

Jiri Pavlenka: There was a lot going on in front of him, very brave with big crosses if not always perfect with fist defences. Well on the post against Becker, powerless when conceding. Note 3

Milos Veljkovic: Remained calm in the cauldron, solved his tasks fairly calmly, even if there was one or the other unnecessary foul. Note 3

Niklas Stark: Heavy demand against the wild onrushing Berliners. Not always winners, but always on the spot and sometimes quite clever with actions on the edge of legality and beyond. Note 2,5

Marco Friedl: Before the break, it was a rollercoaster ride from the captain! Sometimes very strong in a man-to-man duel, then again totally unfocused with very simple ball losses and positional errors. After the change much more stable and attentive. Note 3

Werder Bremen in grades against Union Berlin: Lee Buchanan acts overly nervous when he rarely starts

Leonardo Bittencourt: Had to help out again for the injured Weiser on the right side of defense and had so much to do defensively that he hardly got anything going forward. Then came a tad too late at 0:1 against goal scorer Khedira. Note 4

Ilia Gruev (until 86th): Replaced the injured Groß as a six and initially struggled to find access. Also more hesitant than usual in the game forward, despite great pass security. His calmness on the ball was good for the team, but was too seldom to be seen. Note 3,5

Lee Buchanan (until 61st): At the meaningless season finale, the Englishman was exceptionally allowed to play instead of Jung – only for the second time this season. The Englishman acted overly nervous, lost many duels and easy balls. In between, he also indicated his strengths with good saves – such as the penalty taken back. Plagued by muscular problems, had to come down early. Note 4,5

Romano Schmid: Almost every ball was gone immediately. At least he wasn’t discouraged, tried a lot, but with a few exceptions, not much came of it. Note 5

Niklas Schmidt (until 24th): In his 25th Bundesliga game it was over for him early on. Laidouni had hit him in the head in a hard duel. Schmidt was bleeding, played with a turban for another ten minutes, and then it was no longer possible. Note –

Werder Bremen notes: Niclas Füllkrug weak against Union Berlin, but gets top scorer cannon

Marvin Ducksch: Didn’t get into the game at all, and it was fitting that he simply ducked away from a high ball in the first half. His best act was on his own goal line when he headed to prevent the 0:1. Up front, his header was far too harmless in the closing stages. Note 4,5

Niclas filling jug: He had a hard time with the long balls against the long and robust Berliners, which was also due to the quality of the passes, but also to the lack of assertiveness – as in his individual action immediately after the change. That was still enough for the top scorer cannon. Note 4,5

Maximilian Philip (from 24th): Came for the knocked out Schmidt, but was unable to set any accents at all in eighth. But very robust on the defensive, saw yellow shortly after the break. Note 4,5

Anthony Jung (from 61st): He experienced his 50th Bundesliga game as a substitute and acted very inconspicuously as a substitute for Buchanan. Note –

Eren Dinkci (from 86.): Came for Bremen’s final offensive and caused a bit of danger in the Union penalty area with a nice cross. Note –

Werder Bremen line-up against Union Berlin: A surprise in the starting XI

The line-up of SV Werder Bremen against 1. FC Union Berlin: This is what coach Ole Werner’s starting eleven should look like for the last Bundesliga game of the season.

Update (May 27, 2023, 2:30 p.m.): Now the lineup there – Lee Buchanan starts, Anthony Jung is on the bench! The whole starting eleven and you can read everything else in the live ticker for the game SV Werder Bremen against Union Berlin!

Bremen – Big arithmetic games can SV Werder Bremen save. Not only because the relegation is a done deal, but also because the staff doesn’t allow it. “We have 15 field players, not more,” says the coach Ole Werner before the final away game against Union Berlin (Saturday, 3.30 p.m. in the DeichStube live ticker) to the point. In Mitchell Weiser (muscle injury), Christian Groß (knee problems), Amos Pieper (ankle surgery) and Jens Stage (suspended), four potential regulars are missing for the lineup, and Felix Agu and Dikeni Salifou are still out. What the head coach when choosing his Startfelf-Formation doesn’t leave much room for manoeuvre.

How they could play: SV Werder Bremen’s starting eleven against Union Berlin

“It’s actually not always a good sign if you don’t have a lot of sleepless nights before a game,” Werner jokes. Still, he doesn’t want to lament, which is why he adds matter-of-factly: “It’s the way it is: At the end of the season you’re always a bit drained.” If you try to stay up in the Regionalliga Nord, there will be no replacements from this squad either. So there is at Werder Bremen a small-format appearance in the capital, so to speak. The playful quality in the Starting XI Lineup should therefore not suffer. “Everyone who comes with me Berlin drive, have the right to play in the Bundesliga,” says Ole Werner. “But they have already proven this claim. If we perform well, we will be a powerful team.”

This is how SV Werder Bremen’s starting XI should look like against Union Berlin.

For the lineup von Werder Bremen Could this mean that Leonardo Bittencourt is replacing Weiser on the right flank, as he has done more often this season? In the meantime, Romano Schmid and Niklas Schmidt are likely to be awarded the contract, while directly behind them is Ilia Gruev in sixth position in the starting eleven may prove. From the bench, only Maximilian Philipp, Eren Dinkci, Lee Buchanan, Manuel Mbom or Fabio Chiarodia could intervene in the afternoon. (mbu)
