The Tour of Italy has finally started! In the 16th stage, Joao Almeida opened the final on Monte Bondone early. He was rewarded with the stage victory. Geraint Thomas stuck to his wheel and takes over the pink jersey again, Primoz Roglic was vulnerable uphill and couldn’t keep up with the Portuguese-Welsh duo. Jumbo-Visma leads the peloton all day, but it is João Almeida who unlocks the door on Monte Bondone.
Primoz Roglic and Geraint Thomas stay put, but the Ineos leader still jumps to the Portuguese adventurer.
Roglic has no answer in store and has to count on foreman Sepp Kuss to limit the damage.
Almeida beats Thomas in a sprint-à-deux. It is the first stage victory in a Grand Tour for the Portuguese, Thomas is leader again.
