Uli Hoeneß calls Oliver Kahn a mistake as boss

ZTwo days after the big bang at Bayern with the separation of Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidžić, Uli Hoeneß made further allegations against Kahn, but shook hands with the Munich CEO who had been sacked. “In retrospect”, it was a mistake to make the former captain CEO, Hoeneß said in “Kicker”, “you have to say it like that.”

Kahn is “a highly intelligent man, the exchange with him is fun,” Hoeneß explained, but: “The big disappointment is that I thought he could fill the office qua his personality alone, but instead he dealt with his Surrounded by advisers.” These would have caused “the catastrophically bad mood” in the club. Nevertheless, Hoeneß would like to part with Kahn on good terms. “I have a lot of respect for the person, he has achieved a lot as a player. Even if he hasn’t lived up to expectations as CEO, my door is always open to Oliver,” he stressed.

The 71-year-old also supported President Herbert Hainer’s account of the separation from Kahn, which he had contradicted. “We thought about it for hours, also with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, how to teach them both so that nothing sticks,” said Hoeneß. “It was not a pleasant conversation.” Kahn verbally shot at the new boss Jan-Christian Dreesen. That’s why it was suggested to him not to travel to the “final” in Cologne. According to Hoeneß, the separation had nothing to do with the end of the season. “We would have acted like that with three titles, the decision had to be made like that.”

Dreesen should ensure peace

Now it should be Dreesen instead of Kahn. “Jan Dreesen knows the club inside out, a new man would have had to get used to it again for six months,” Hoeneß defended the decision. It is important to get peace in the club now. The former CEO Rummenigge should return to the supervisory board and support the Munich team in planning the squad for the coming season. Hainer had already confirmed that he would propose Rummenigge’s move up to the supervisory board at the shareholders’ meeting on Tuesday.

FC Bayern do not want to rush into finding a suitable successor to Salihamidžić as sporting director. By Christmas at the latest, the people of Munich want to have the position filled again, as Hoeneß said. According to this, a quartet consisting of Hoeneß, Hainer, the new CEO and Kahn successor Dreesen and returnee Rummenigge should look for and commit the new man.

The quartet will take over the squad planning in close cooperation with coach Thomas Tuchel. According to Hoeneß, the 49-year-old should be available to the committee for the next eight to ten days to make his own suggestions. Julian Nagelsmann’s successor announced on Sunday that he would not be taking any vacation for the time being. “I have to take responsibility for the sporting development,” said Tuchel after the overall disappointing season with only one title.
