Ugo Humbert wins the Bordeaux Challenger

The hot potato of the first French place in the ATP ranking is now in the hands of Ugo Humbert. Winner of the Bordeaux Challenger on Saturday, dominating the Argentinian Tomas Etcheverry (61st in the world) 7-6 (3), 6-4, the Messin is the fifth Blue to inherit this symbolic leadership since the start of the season.

That Humbert once again became top of the class in the middle of the clay court season, a week away from Roland-Garros, is comical to say the least when you know how much the surface has never been his cup of tea, he who learned the tennis on carpet, in Moselle. However, before switching to ocher, he crushed everything except black.

He was then asked to specify the evolution of his relationship with the land. “At the beginning, I was not sliding wellhe remembered. And from the bottom I did not hold the ball. There wasn’t really a shot I could lean on and no sequences of shots. My flat backhand didn’t bother that much, my forehand was also very flat, but I worked it with Jérémy (Chardy, son coach). If I manage to wind it a little more, the difference between my two shots can become interesting. There I worked on it, I think it can’t be so bad, we’ll see what happens…”

They sprung up in D2. It’s up to him to convert them into the tables of the main circuit where he has yet to win a single match on earth in four tournaments.
