Skaters’ clothing style stems from comfort and utility. You need durable and comfortable clothing when you ride on asphalt, metal poles or halfpipes. That is why solid fabrics such as denim, heavy cotton and twill are preferred, as these can also withstand the occasional fall.

The skater boy style follows a simple, relaxed silhouette: an oversized top with baggy jeans/trousers and casual sneakers. The tops, including hoodies, long sleeves and T-shirts, often feature graphic prints and branding. Pants or shorts are baggy, denim or cargo pants, and are often torn or shortened for skating comfort. Skate sneakers like the Vans Authentic or Old Skool are optimized for sports – mostly made of sturdy canvas or suede and with a non-slip sole. On the accessories side, you can find baseball caps and bucket hats in particular.

The biggest part of the skatewear look, however, is the attitude – casually combined, not always coordinated and a bit rough and worn. (GQ recommends: The long sleeve is the coolest and most casual spring trend 2023)

The best skater style brands and pieces

Brands that are part of the basic equipment for skaters are mainly workwear labels such as Dickies, Carhartt and Wrangler. The fabrics are hard-wearing, the silhouettes wide and relaxed. But also specific skater style brands such as Stüssy, Element, Santa Cruz or Volcom, as well as more exclusive labels such as Supreme or ERL design skatewear pieces.
