The Argentine architect behind Hanfmann, the Roman surprise

The German Yannick Hanfmann is the great feeling Rome Masters 1000: arrived in the Italian capital outside the Top 100, went through qualifying and settled in the quarterfinals after beating two Top 10 (Taylor Fritz, 9th; Andrey Rublev, 6th and champion of the 2023 Monte-Carlo Master 1000).

Juan Pablo Brzezicki (1982) He has been training Hanfmann (1991) since February 2022 but they already knew each other from the time that the Argentine played interclubs in Germany and Yannick was a ballboy. From Rome, preparing the match for Medvedev, Brzezicki spoke with ESPN Tennis.

“There was good chemistry from the beginning and we strengthened a lot. In the first half of 2022, Yannick was sick for three months with a virus that he caught in Morocco. Then we met again in June, he made the semis in Kitzbuhel and the second half of the year he was able to play better, we finished the year super motivated. He had enormous courage to bet full: he came to Buenos Aires to do a three and a half week pre-season. want and believe“, says enthusiastically the Argentine who became 94th in the world in 2008.

Hanfmann’s sports life has a big difference with that of the rest of the players on the circuit: “He went to the University of California (USC), received his degree in Political Science and started his career at the age of 25,” says his coach. After Rome, at 31 he will be (at least) Top 70 in the world; his best ranking until today was 92nd.

“You believe a lot in the player and you try to carry it trusting in the daily process. It’s a daily job. We were close to 100 and several players tend to get stressed there. It was always between 90 and 150. It was a matter of working psychologically. He does not work with a psychologist, we take the post with my wife Erica and I to be with a very big containment all the time. We incorporated into the kinesio team, PF, a group of managers, the other coach who helps us. We put together a coaching staff that I love. Each time we offered him more security and he let himself, absorbs like a sponge.

Did this week surprise you?
This result does not surprise me. If you look at what happened this year, he was very solid, very firm and all that perseverance that he did not have in these 5/6 years of his career he had on a day-to-day basis. The average was always very high. It was a matter of time before it was transferred to the competition. In Chile we made quarters losing 6-4 in the third with Jarry who won the tournament, in Houston he made semis and beat Tommy Paul, 18th in the world (N. de R.: Australian semifinalist) in Munich lost to Rune in the second round. In Madrid she beat Musetti who is 15th in the world. The level is there, it is a matter of accommodating details and continuing to grow. The objective is to grow on a personal level, on a tennis level and enjoy. There are players who stress a lot, who think a lot. But it’s how I always mark Yannick: we are 60 in the world but there is another tournament on Monday. And if we are 120 we have to keep working.

-With this tournament and getting into the top 70, he will no longer play qualys in important tournaments for a while, he will have more open draws in small tournaments. How far do you think it can go?
-He has so many tools that I like to be very tactical and he can do it with the tools he has. At 31 years old it is a pleasure to see him like this, he started the race late and has tennis for much more. He has no roof. One wonders, what else is stored there?
