RB Leipzig defeats Freiburg and jumps to third place

Timo Werner summed up the successful double strike in Breisgau. “It was a big week for us,” said the national striker from RB Leipzig after the 1-0 (1-0) duel for a place in the Champions League at SC Freiburg on Sky. The Saxons had already triumphed 5-1 at Sport-Club in the DFB Cup semifinals on Tuesday and made it into the final in Berlin.

Substitute Kevin Kampl (73rd) also made Freiburg’s second dream goal of the season a long way off. RB remains the feared opponent, in the last nine duels the team of coach Christian Streich has not managed to win. “We controlled the game and deserved to win. We fought for it in the end. You don’t always win like 5-1 on Tuesday,” summarized Werner.

Werner hits the post

While Leipzig remains on its wave of euphoria after reaching the final in the DFB Cup, the sports club missed its revenge. Despite the third home defeat, the surprise team still has the first qualification for the premier class in their own hands, next week Saturday (3.30 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Bundesliga and on Sky) the next direct duel with Union Berlin is on the agenda.

As on Tuesday, RB started very dominantly in front of 32,900 spectators and showed some great combinations. Above all, the excess speed on the offensive was immediately noticeable. Werner hit the post alone in front of the goal after a dream pass from Amadou Haidara (5′), his next attempt was then deflected just over the crossbar (10′). Freiburg hardly ever managed to relieve the pressure.

On one of the rare excursions into the opposing half, debutant Weißhaupt went down in a duel with Willi Orban (16′), but referee Tobias Welz’s whistle remained silent despite lively protests. As a result, the Sport-Club got a little more access, at least defensively, also because Leipzig lost a bit of accuracy in the last third. With the best chance, Christopher Nkunku and Werner hindered each other (27th).

After the change, Freiburg played a little braver, bought RB with more intensity in the duel. The game became more open as a result, and Freiburg now had longer ball relays. However, both teams lacked ideas and power in the last third. Kampl’s goal was a pure effort of will with a fine finish.
