Manchester United dropped points on Thursday in the battle for a Champions League ticket. The team of manager Erik ten Hag went down deep in injury time due to a used penalty kick to visit Brighton & Hove Albion: 1-0.
United escaped a quick deficit at the Amex Stadium thanks to David de Gea. The Spanish goalkeeper turned a close bet from Kaoru Mitoma with his head. On the other hand, Antony shot into the side net, while Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial hit keeper Jason Steele.
Brighton claimed the most victory in the second half with shots from Solly March and Alexis Mac Allister, among others. The game was heading for a draw, but deep into injury time it still became 1-0. Luke Shaw made a hand in the penalty area and after a VAR intervention Mac Allister was able to score from 11 meters.
Antony escaped a red card fifteen minutes before the end. After not getting a free kick, the former Ajax player frustratedly kicked an opponent over, but referee Andre Marriner stuck to a yellow card.
Wout Weghorst came in for United just before time. Tyrell Malacia did not receive any playing minutes from Ten Hag. Jan Paul van Hecke stayed on the bench at Brighton for ninety minutes. Joël Veltman and Donny van de Beek are dealing with injuries.
Despite the loss, United are still on course for a Champions League ticket. Ten Hag’s team is four points ahead of number five Liverpool, which has also played one game more. The top four teams in the Premier League qualify for the Champions League.
