Paris Basketball formalizes the departure of its American coach, a Finn well placed to succeed him

He himself had taken the lead. On Tuesday May 16, a few moments after the defeat (93-85) on the Metropolitans’ floor, which sealed the end of the Betclic Elite season for his team, Will Weaver announced at a press conference that he was going to leave Paris Basketball . An announcement confirmed this Wednesday by the capital club on its social networks.

Landed in France last summer, the American coach had allowed Paris to climb to the quarter-finals of the Eurocup (beaten by the Spaniards of Gran Canaria, future winners) but the club had narrowly failed (9th) qualify for the Betclic Elite playoffs. He was at the end of his contract and had not responded to the club’s extension proposals in March. He should bounce back quickly in the staff of an NBA franchise. His profile could interest teams such as the Brooklyn Nets or the Toronto Raptors.

To replace him, the capital club should once again turn to a coach with an international profile. According to European media, the Finn Tuomas Iisalo (40) would be in pole position. The Bonn coach – leader of the regular season in the German championship – was also voted coach of the season in the Champions League (C3), a competition which he won.

His arrival should launch a new cycle at Paris Basketball. The year promises to be pivotal for the club which will move to the Adidas Arena during the course of the season. The workforce should be remodeled. Dustin Sleva, on loan this season, Axel Toupane, Gauthier Denis, and French nuggets Mohamed Diawara and Killian Malwaya, under contract, should always wear the Parisian tunic.

Drafted in 46th position by Detroit before being transferred to Denver last summer, Ismaël Kamagate is also under contract. The international pivot will play the Summer League (a summer competition that allows NBA teams to supervise young players) in July. He could stay one more season in Paris.
