Brutal attack on Greifswald police officers – imprisonment for perpetrators

Eight months after a violent attack against a 60-year-old police officer, the Greifswald district court sentenced a 24-year-old man to three years in prison. “Violence against police officers, that’s not possible,” said Judge Olaf Witt on Tuesday in the verdict. The convict was found guilty of dangerous bodily harm and two counts of assault against law enforcement officials. Witt also issued an arrest warrant against the man, since there is now a risk of absconding due to the impending prison sentence.

The 24-year-old, who was at large until the trial, was taken away from the courtroom. The verdict is not yet legally binding. The incident happened on September 11, 2022 in front of a nightclub in Greifswald. MV Interior Minister Christian level (SPD) had also sharply condemned the attack on the police officer at the time.

Attack with a special judo grip

The police had been called by the security service because several guests were expelled from the club but did not want to leave the premises. While the officers calmed the situation down and arrested two of the convict’s acquaintances, he also wanted to go there. As witnesses described in the process, the 60-year-old police officer dismissed the later attacker with a slight hand movement. The man didn’t want to accept that, said the judge.

The significantly smaller 24-year-old attacked the officer with a special judo grip on his legs, causing him to lose his balance and hit his head backwards on concrete.

Police officer is 80 percent disabled

The victim was first unconscious, then regained consciousness briefly, suffered cerebral hemorrhage and had to be operated on several times because of the severe brain injury. The man appeared in court as a joint plaintiff, needs a walker to walk, has problems speaking and, according to the doctors, is currently still 80 percent disabled. That was a result of the brain injury from the incident, said a coroner.

The convicted man was then caught by two other officers at the scene of the crime – again in the face of heavy resistance. An officer was also injured. After the interrogation, the man was released until the trial. The 24-year-old’s lawyer spoke of an accident.

The judgment was also necessary for “general preventive reasons” at this level, said the judge. He spoke of a “life-threatening act”. The state must protect those who are responsible for protecting society. With the verdict, the chamber largely followed the request of the public prosecutor, who had asked for three months more detention.

Defender Mario Wittkopf had pleaded negligent bodily harm. Therefore, the lawyer had demanded a prison sentence of a maximum of two years, which should be suspended on probation.
