NHL | You used to be laughed at for wearing buckled skates, now they’re used in the NHL

The discussion on the Příklep program confirms that this relatively new fashion has not yet taken hold in Czech hockey. “Buckle skates? If you tell me like this, I can’t really answer that either. I haven’t seen that yet,” admits Roman Málek, Slavia’s goalkeeping coach.

Even in the NHL, this innovation is only slowly gaining ground. The aforementioned Lindgren switched to buckles only before last year. Later, the skates were also spotted under the concrete of Andrey Vasilevsky from Tampa or Kaap Kähkönen from San Jose.

However, Málek draws attention to other changes in goalie skates. “For me, the knives were fours, four millimeters wide of that knife. That knife is completely different, everyone knows that. I’ve also experienced that it was narrowed down to three, that it was the same as a player’s skates, and today they are generally half and half again, that fours come back,” reveals the former representative.

He himself said he used to have a special request for custodians. “I needed to have my skates sharpened for every game, I had my skates sharpened before every game before I skated… some people don’t sharpen almost at all,” he says when asked by moderator Honza Homolka.

It’s also worth noting that wooden goalie sticks are probably really over in the NHL. Marc-André Fleury admitted to theAthletic.com website in the fall that he too had switched to a composite stick. At the same time, he was one of the last men known to stick to wood. Brian Elliott from Tampa Bay should be the last goaltender with a wooden stick in the NHL.

Goalkeeper masks have also found use in movies, history also remembers very eccentric stunts. Passage from the program PříklepVideo: Sport.cz

Málek himself experienced the transition from wooden sticks to composite sticks during his engagement in Sparta. “I tried composite at the end of my career. Today, things have definitely changed,” says the 45-year-old O2TV Sport expert.

Hašek about the expansion of goalkeeping equipment in the program PříklepVideo: Sport.cz

“I made a completely new composite hockey stick and for skating, when the last shot was from the semi-circle, I think it was Honza Buchtele, who has a terrible wound, so he hit me in the cue and my stick broke, and I think that another I did a new training and the same thing happened to me, so I went back to the one I was used to,” he says in the hockey studio.
