NBA star Doncic pays for funeral for children killed in Serbia by shooting

NBA star Luka Doncic will pay funeral expenses for children killed in a shooting in Belgrade on Wednesday, the 24-year-old Dallas Mavericks player said via his foundation.

Slovenian Doncic has a father with Serbian roots. Among others, his grandmother, aunt and uncle live near Belgrade. A spokesperson for his foundation tells us ESPN that the basketball player will finance not only the funeral, but also the mourning costs for students and teachers.

Eight children and a guard died on Wednesday in a shooting at an elementary school in the Serbian capital. The suspect is a thirteen-year-old student, who was arrested after calling the police himself.

Shortly after the tragedy, Doncic expressed his condolences in a statement. “I am deeply saddened by the death of innocent children. My thoughts go out to the family members and community affected by this terrible event.”

“Through my foundation, I look for ways to support students, family members, and the school in the short and long term.”

Doncic has been playing for the Mavericks since 2018 after a previous stint with Real Madrid. The Slovenian quickly became one of the absolute protagonists of the Dallas team.
