Michael Winger’s plan for the Wizards

When a franchise changes boss in the offices, it is assumed that they will want to shape their own team. Some opt for a quick change of coach, others to evaluate what they have in the squad to improve it and there are also those who directly want to build everything from scratch; And yes, right in this last section is Michael Winger, the new president of the Washington Wizards.

In an interview with Ben Golliver of The Washington Post, the executive makes it clear that what he really loves about his work is not the last step (winning), but laying the foundations of a project. After playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clippers, he explains what it’s like at work and what he hopes to do in Washington.

“You open the box and usually the Lego bricks come in four or five numbered packs. You open the first package and that’s basically the base of the structure. You open the second package, and there the walls and other things start to appear. I really love helping my daughter with the first two or three packages, and then I get bored when number five comes around,” she explains.

The reality is that Winger reaches a Wizards who have not reached 50 victories in the last 44 years and who, once again, have the possibility of starting a deep reconstruction in the air. They have two players with huge contracts in Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis, but the organization’s owner, Ted Leonsis, has already indicated that he would not be opposed to starting a new project from scratch; such an idea is shared by Winger.

«I would not like to arrive at a ready-made organization. That’s not very exciting. It’s going to be a matter of establishing a culture and creating an identity that we can hold on to and carry on for the next half decade. Sometimes, change for the sake of change accelerates progress », he warns.

The words of one and the other do not ensure that in the capital of the United States they will press the button reset, but it does make it clear that their pulse will not tremble if they understand what they should do. The Wizards have been in no man’s land for too many years. Perhaps they need to take a significant step back in order to really move forward.
