Marc Gasol wants to “enjoy” tomorrow’s game without clarifying if it will be his farewell

Marc Gasol will play tomorrow with Básquet Girona in Fontajau, against Baskonia, the last game of the season. The unknown of whether it will also be the last of his career will remain for a few more weeks or months, because, as he explained this morning, he has not yet made a decision. “It must be a celebratory game with the fans, the time will come to make a decision with the peace of mind of having given everything,” he assured. The pivot also said that “physically I am available to play tomorrow. I want to finish the season with my teammates on the track, for me it’s special to be able to do it at 38 years old and with all the kilometers I’ve done. It will be special for me. I will make the decision about my future with the distance. I will analyze the overall picture of the season and study whether I am ready to face the challenge.”

The president, founder and player of Básquet Girona appeared this morning to take stock of the season as the season closes tomorrow, with salvation in his pocket, at home against Baskonia (8:30 p.m.). There have been few, if any, clues about the future. Gasol has emphasized that they will start from Thursday because tomorrow they are only focused on enjoying the game and having a good farewell to the season in Fontajau. Precisely Aíto will have all the squad available for this duel except for Jenkins, who is causing discomfort.

Gasol also spoke of the great social response “from Girona and the whole territory” to the Girona project at the ACB, which has led to 95% occupancy in Fontajau and many parties rubbing the floor. “The support and atmosphere and the willingness to encourage even when there were moments that cost has been spectacular. People have always responded very positively. A special feeling and a two-way relationship between the fans and the team is slowly being created. For us the fans are a very important part.”

Regarding the season, and how he experienced the game in Zaragoza where salvation was sealed, Marc Gasol pointed out that “it has been a course full of challenges and obstacles that, luckily, we have been able to overcome. That is why now I want to enjoy the tomorrow’s game, and from Thursday we will assess aspects of the future.” On the table, aside from his decision on whether he continues to play or retires, there are other issues such as whether the bet for Aíto García Reneses will remain on the bench, or which players from the current squad will remain. In his parliament he also recalled that Basketball Girona has launched a new general manager, Stefi Batlle, and has taken the opportunity to thank the work of the previous CEO, Xevi Gasau“who has done a magnificent job”.

For the president, staying in the ACB is a sporting success, but he values that “this goes beyond the first team, even if it is the part that has the most focus”. In this sense, he valued the first year of understanding with Uni at the base, alongside Laia Palau, with important achievements such as the good role of the junior team in the Spanish Championship. “We’re looking forward to continuing to build and improve the base. We’re reorganizing the structure of the club to do things better and we’re looking 5 to 10 years ahead.”
