Manuel Neuer’s suffering is coming to an end. Bayern can also hope for a needed level of leadership with his return.
Munich – The mood is great. Here’s a photo, there’s a little chatter, plus nice words with friend Anika Bissel and of course: two cheers. As usual, Manuel Neuer watched FC Bayern’s 2-0 win over Hertha BSC from the lower tier of the main stand in the Allianz Arena on Sunday, but the pictures that circulated of the injured captain were much more positive than they were last time.
On the one hand, this was due to the fact that his colleagues managed to jump back to the top of the table. But also because his long rehab is on the home stretch. Neuer’s ordeal is as good as over after five months – and FC Bayern will soon be a top priority again.

“It’s fun to take a step forward every day. We are all optimistic,” emphasizes Neuer. There is no exact date for his comeback, but everyone who follows Neuer’s daily work in the weight room reports that the days can be counted backwards from now on. It will be two or three weeks, maybe a few more days, before the captain dares to step back onto the pitch.
Super in the flow, it is said, is the 37-year-old in his rehab; the plan he came up with with the doctors shortly after his skiing accident and the subsequent operation on his lower leg has worked out perfectly. Neuer is in the absolute target, who will go on the pitch for light running training in the course of the second half of the season. Then on July 1st he wants – and will – be at full strength to start the preparations. As number one, of course.

However, he consciously put his own goal in the foreground and renounced things that he had little influence on. The hard work is now paying off. Neuer is dying to return – and the team is also longing for its captain. That Neuer’s leadership of the team was missing could be heard in the messed up second half of the season. You see each other every day and exchange ideas. Neuer, however, did not push himself to the fore or even give speeches.
He is aware that the situation in his club is not good. And it was important for him to publicly express his dissatisfaction with his personal situation – and the end of his intimate and goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic. After SZinterview in February but my head was clear and my focus was set again. The reactions? incidental.
Neuer does his thing, and it will stay that way. And so it’s only logical that he doesn’t shy away from competition in goal. Thomas Tuchel relies on his captain, and the exchange with Tapalovic’s successor Michaelrechner is constructive and profitable – and Yann Sommer would not put any obstacles in his way if he wanted a change.
