The 28-year-old Portuguese started at Manchester City, and at the end of January he was loaned to FC Bayern Munich until the end of the season. After Bayern beat Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16, Cancelo also played two special games. Quarter-final opponents were Manchester City. The Skyblues won the first leg 3-0, and after a 1-1 draw in the second leg, coach Pep Guardiola’s team advanced to the semi-finals. Cancelo played for Bayern Munich in both games. For Manchester City, the dream of winning the Champions League is still alive. After defending champions Real Madrid were knocked out in the semifinals, Inter Milan will be at stake on June 10th.

Cancelo will follow the final in Istanbul with great interest. On the one hand, he is still under contract with the Citizens until the summer of 2027, on the other hand, he is also about to win a title there. Should Manchester win the final, he would be the official Champions League winner as he played for City in the group stage.

This is sufficient according to the guidelines of the UEFA. A player does not have to be in the winner’s squad at the time the title is won in order to be a Champions League winner.

As already described, Cancelo is only on loan to FC Bayern until the end of this season. With the German record champions, for whom he has played 20 games since the start of the loan, he can still become champion. Bayern are two points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund going into the last matchday.

It is not yet clear where Cancelo will play next season. He is still under contract with Manchester City until 2027, but it is quite possible that FC Bayern will sign him permanently – albeit not for the purchase option of 70 million euros anchored in the loan contract.

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel would like to see him continue in the Bayern squad. “I really love him. His desire to train is unique. I have the impression that he feels very comfortable. But in the end, all parties are involved in such a loan deal. That has not yet been decided,” he said recently at a press conference .
