The 19th stage of the Tour of Italy Longarone – Tre Cime di Lavaredo was also the most awaited. A decisive appointment for the fate of the 106th edition of the Corsa in Rosa, the classic Dolomite stage, the real “flagship” of the race. No particular upheaval in the standings after the triumph of Buitrago protagonist of the day, with Thomas more and more leader and appointment postponed to the penultimate act which will decide the winner. Spectators present along the evocative route enjoyed the show braving the cold and bad weather, even if someone exaggerated, risking causing serious damage.

In the final stretch of the stage, the hardest one and characterized by a gradient of 12% with peaks of 18%, fans and enthusiasts positioned themselves as always on the side of the road. There was no shortage of suggestive scenes, such as that of the man who followed the runners with what appeared to be a stuffed fox. Smiles, but also anger and disappointment at the risk taken by the caravan. In fact, there have also been bad episodes that could have had very serious consequences for cyclists.

Some fans literally invaded the street endangering the health of athletes already tried by the difficulties of the track. In an attempt to be immortalized by the cameras, a man turned his back to the pink jersey group, looking at the cameras that preceded him in the dedicated car. Thus he did not notice the arrival of the cyclists and above all Mattia Bais, who managed to avoid him at the very last second. The expression of the Italian athlete was a whole program with a face to betray all his disappointment.

Giro d’Italia 2023, Roglic’s masterpiece in the uphill time trial: it’s the new pink jersey

An ugly scene born of unconsciousness which, however, did not remain isolated. Immediately afterwards, a girl grappling with a phone for the classic selfie and a lady turned towards the camera once again put the safety of the arriving athletes at risk.

Unfortunately it is not the first time that these situations have occurred which risk ruining the show of the Giro and above all provoking falls and consequently injuries in an edition already marked by many unscheduled events. After the plague of smartphones protruding over the finish line, here’s another problem that actually recurs at every competition of this kind. And who knows what in the future no action is taken drastic by limiting the presence of the public. A pity, but it may be necessary because of some unruly enthusiasts.
