Jelena Rybakina benefits from the surrender of her opponent Anhelina Kalinina in the final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome.

Jelena Rybakina (WTA 6) led 6: 4 and 1: 0 in the final in Rome before her opponent Anhelina Kalinina (WTA 47) had to give up in tears. The surprising finalist from Ukraine, who had contested several marathon matches during the tournament in the “Foro Italico”, first let the doctor come onto the field. But an injury to her left thigh finally forced her to forfeit.

«I’m really sorry for Anhelina who is a friend. I wish her a speedy recovery, »said Rybakina when she received her trophy well after midnight.

Rybakina as a Grand Slam contender in Paris

For Rybakina, who reached the final of the Australian Open in January, it was her 5th career title and her 2nd of the year following her win over Aryna Sabalenka in Indian Wells. This makes her one of the favorites at the French Open, which begins on May 28th.

In the world rankings, 23-year-old Rybakina will move up to No. 4, her best-ever ranking.
