“I am ambitious and we are going to go for Rome”

MADRID, 7 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz acknowledged how “super emotional” it is to have defended the title at the Mutua Madrid Open this Sunday and confirmed that he will be in the Masters 1000 in Rome because he is “ambitious”, which will allow him to recover the number one in the world .

“They are very beautiful achievements. Winning my fourth Masters 1000, defending my title here and being almost at the gates of recovering number one, are very great things that I am doing and I am very proud of the work and of these achievements. I am ambitious and we are going to go through Rome,” Alcaraz said at a press conference.

For the Murcian, “Madrid is everything”. “I’ve spent my last three birthdays here, but I’ve had a lot of watching the tournament and there came an age where I didn’t celebrate with friends but came here to watch tennis and dream that I was going to be playing. Now, playing and raising my trophy in Madrid is super emotional. Madrid is a super special place for me, it is everything”, he stressed.

The man from El Palmar confessed that he had “enjoyed more than suffered” in the final. “There have been moments in which I have not enjoyed it, at one point it has become very complicated, but most of the time I have enjoyed it,” he said.

“There have been moments, especially in the second, that I have had options to break his serve. In the second set he has had a higher percentage of ‘firsts’ and it has cost me a little more, so I have simply taken advantage of the moments in which I have I had opportunities in the first and in the third. He also had options at the beginning of the third, where he put pressure on me and I suffered a lot”, he reviewed.

For this reason, he believes that it was key to “be positive and go for it” in the opportunities he had and also to have his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero close by giving him “instructions”. “It has helped me a lot, there has been a time when the negative has eaten me a bit,” he admitted.

Alcaraz does not hide the fact that he can be considered “a finals player” since he has won almost all the ones he has played thanks to his “ability” to know how to play “the important moments” of the matches. “That’s when I grow up and do different things from the rest of the players,” he said.

“Yes, I am one of those who plays badly and is capable of taking the games forward. You don’t play 80 percent of the games in a year at the level you want and those days are the ones that count twice because you have to know how to overcome the difficulties”, added the number two in the world, who, looking to the future, the only thing that worries him are “injuries”.
