The ranks in the grandstand of the Foro Italico were empty after midnight when the newcomer Anna-Lena Friedsam challenged the former No. 2 in the world with Paula Badosa.
The favorite from Spain got off to a better start, being able to secure Friedsam’s service right at the start. As the first round progressed, the 29-year-old German got into the game better and fought her way back into the match. In a long service game by Badosa, Friedsam managed the decisive break to set the lead in the tenth game.
In the second act, Badosa increasingly took the initiative and equalized the set after a quick 3-0 lead. In the deciding round, in which each player was able to win her opponent’s service game once, the decision was to be made in the tie-break, in which the 25-year-old Badosa ultimately got the upper hand with her powerful game to 4: 6, 6: 2, 7: 6 (2) success after 2:38 hours of play.
After the defeats of their Billie Jean King Cup colleagues Jule Niemeier and Tatjana Maria, there are no longer any German singles players in the competition in Rome.
Here the single tableau from Rome
