Dominic Stricker paid tuition when he first took part in the French Open.Bild: keystone

Participating in a main field of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time ends with a disappointment for Dominic Stricker. The world number 2 surprisingly fails due to a Brazilian qualifier and a Basel junior winner breaks in against US star Gauff. The most important thing from the 3rd day of competition.

Stricker had no chance in the first round

Dominic Stricker paid his dues at the Stade Roland-Garros. The 20-year-old Berner from Gross Höchstetten had had high hopes since the ATP confirmed on Friday evening that he was a lucky loser. Most recently, Stricker worked his way up the rankings with tournament victories on the Challenger Tour in Rovereto and Prague. In the Czech Republic, Stricker defeated Filip Krajinovic, a seasoned top 100 player. Tommy Paul, on the other hand, lost to world Nos. 134, 112, 79 and 52 on clay in Houston to Yannick Hanfmann, in Madrid to Roman Safiullin, in Rome to Cristian Garin and in Lyon to Brandon Nakashima.

On the “Court No. 6” in the Stade Roland-Garros another truth presented itself. Dominic Stricker was dominated in every respect by Tommy Paul, both former junior champions at the French Open. Stricker lost his first service game in all three sets. The 20-year-old Swiss only managed a break in the second round (to make it 1-1).

In the end, Stricker suffered the most significant defeat in an ATP tour tournament since his debut in Geneva two years ago. And in these two years Stricker played against calibers like Marin Cilic (win), Hubert Hurkacz (win), Aslan Karazew (win), Maxime Cressy (2x win), Stefanos Tsitsipas (defeat), Albert Ramos-Viñolas (defeat), Botic van de Zandschulp (win), Richard Gasquet (loss) and Pablo Carreño Busta (loss). Against Tsitsipas on grass in Stuttgart, Stricker suffered the clearest defeat before the French Open (3: 6, 4: 6).

There were reasons for the hopelessness of the young Swiss hope. Dominic Stricker couldn’t rely on his sleekest weapon, the serve. In the first hour of the game, Stricker fielded less than half of the first serves. And with the second serve, assuming that it came through at all, Stricker wasn’t able to worry the American. Overall, Stricker made six double mistakes – most of those in the five service games that the Bernese didn’t get through. Stricker only managed four of his first nine service games.

In the end, the nonchalance with which Tommy Paul dumped Stricker in the third set hurt almost more than the clear final result. Despite the opponent’s gentleness, the Swiss had no chance of returning to the game.

Medvedev fails due to qualifier

The Russian world number 2 Daniil Medvedev was surprisingly eliminated against a qualifier. Medvedev had to beat Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild (ATP 172) in the 1st round after 4:15 hours 6: 7 (5: 7), 7: 6 (8: 6), 6: 2, 3: 6, 4: give 6 beaten. The French Open remains difficult terrain for the 27-year-old, who until recently had celebrated his greatest successes exclusively on hard court. Most recently, however, Medvedev won the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome on clay – a week later, however, the next disappointment followed on the surface.

For 23-year-old Seyboth Wild, who is only in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time, the tournament in Paris continues against the winner of the duel Quentin Halys – Guido Pella.

Sovereign Casper Ruud

Casper Ruud, last year’s finalist, started the French Open with a 6: 4, 6: 3, 6: 2 win over Elias Ymer. The Norwegian has had the most wins on clay courts in the last three years (82). In the current clay court season, however, he had to be content with just one tournament win (Estoril).
