French Open: Alexander Zverev gives the reasons for the separation from coach Sergi Bruguera

Sergi Bruguera, that’s important to Alexander Zverev, is a “mad guy” in a positive sense.

And yet: the two-time French Open winner and his strategy did not fit into the Olympic champion’s team, after the ATP Masters in Madrid the cooperation that had begun in spring 2022 ended.

Since Zverev only went public with the personnel one day before Roland-Garros, the topic is also present in Paris – where the 26-year-old now gave further details about the Causa Bruguera.

“Above all, he had a different opinion than my father and Tobias (Kamke, AdR). That didn’t help because when I get three different opinions from three people, I don’t know what to listen to, who to rely on,” he explained Zverev in an exclusive interview with Eurosport.

Becker analyzes Zverev: “I really liked the physique”

With regard to the style of play after the injury comeback, there were different opinions. “I want to be a very aggressive player who hits the balls,” said Zverev. A tactic that he could not implement in the 7: 6 (8: 6), 7: 6 (7: 0), 6: 1 in round one against Lloyd Harris. The service game was fine, but there was a lot of room for improvement in the rallies.

Becker analyses: This is how Zverev won against Harris

“The most important thing is that he won in three sets. I really liked his serve and his physique. Sascha looked very fresh, even after two and a half hours,” lifted Boris Becker at Eurosport the positive aspects. Nevertheless, Zverev will not be able to avoid a clear increase if he wants to keep the upper hand against Alex Molcan in round two.

Zverev offensive: “Still wants to win Grand Slams”

Above all, however, is the dream of a major title. “I still want to win Grand Slams and the big tournaments, but I can only do that with an aggressive game,” said Zverev.

Bruguera is of the “opinion that you have to find your way back, get self-confidence and fight through the matches”. That’s true, “but I think I can regain my confidence through playing aggressive tennis,” believes the world number 27. Bruguera saw it differently.

So Zverev is now all the more relying on his current team, which, however, has to do without a coach and sparring partner Michail Ledowskich. “He has a Russian passport and is currently unable to get out of Russia. Mikhail doesn’t get a visa for Europe, none for America. He’s not going anywhere,” explains Zverev.

Zverev: Kamke was the “favorite option”

That’s why the role of Tobias Kamke, who takes over from Ledowskich, is so important. “He was my favorite option, he’s known me since I was two years old. I’m incredibly happy that he said yes to the job,” emphasized Zverev.

Kamke, who lost to Hamburg twice during his career and once climbed to 64th place in the ATP ranking, is an absolute asset. “He has a good eye for this sport,” Zverev praised the 37-year-old.

The 2020 US Open finalist is very satisfied with the new composition of his team, which also includes brother Mischa Zverev, physiotherapist Hugo Gavril and Sergej Bubka Junior.

Only on the pitch does Zverev not radiate this satisfaction – but that could still change in Paris…
