Carlos Nava reacts to the news about the decision to step away from the Warriors presidency and gives clues about what the future could hold for the man who built an era team.

Bob Myers, a two-time executive of the year and architect of four NBA championships with the Golden State Warriors, will step down as the franchise’s president and general manager, he told ESPN on Tuesday.

“It’s time,” Myers told ESPN. Myers, whose contract expires at the end of June, turned down the team’s offers on a new deal that would have paid him among the league’s highest-earning executives, he said. Myers described how the decision-making process that led him to leave the franchise after 12 years included several factors beyond money.

Myers, 48, said he is unsure of his future career path, but if he ever decides to return to a team, he is expected to become one of the most sought-after executives in modern American professional sports history.

Myers’ combination of leadership, talent screening and the respect he commands at all levels of the industry — front office, coaches, players and agents — makes him attractive to a potential front office or ownership group.

In his twelve years with the Warriors, Myers, who grew up in the Bay Area as a fan of the franchise and later played basketball at UCLA, built a Hall of Fame resume. He enjoyed strong working and personal relationships with key members of the Warriors dynasty: Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and coach Steve Kerr. He let each of them know in recent days that there was a real possibility he would step down, the sources said.

With Myers gone, Warriors owner Joe Lacob is expected to seek more prominent roles for his son, Kirk, executive vice president of basketball operations, and Mike Dunleavy Jr., vice president of basketball operations.

The Warriors face a difficult crossroads with a payroll and luxury tax that could approach a record $500 million in 2023-24 without tough decisions being made about the futures of key players, including Green and Thompson.

The Warriors won four titles in the past eight years before losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals this spring. The Warriors have reached the NBA Finals six times in Myers’ 11 seasons as general manager, losing to Toronto (2019) and Cleveland (2016). Myers oversaw the Warriors’ search for Kevin Durant, who arrived as a free agent in 2016 and was part of two titles with the Warriors before tearing his Achilles tendon in the 2019 NBA Finals.
