What did sports director Hasan Salihamidzic and club boss Oliver Kahn do wrong? Why were you dismissed from FC Bayern? Lothar Matthäus knows the sporting mistakes of the two. The record national player lists them.
NAfter Oliver Kahn left as CEO of FC Bayern Munich, Lothar Matthäus sees the lack of full support for the former national goalkeeper as the main reason. When asked about Kahn’s biggest mistake, Matthäus replied to “Bild”: “Certainly that he didn’t manage to get the whole club behind him and thus convince him of his plans.”
The previous sports director Hasan Salihamidzic, on the other hand, did not manage to keep Hans-Dieter Flick as a coach at Bayern, said record national player Matthäus, when asked about his cardinal mistake. Flick left Bayern in 2021 and was replaced by Julian Nagelsmann from RB Leipzig. The coach is currently called Thomas Tuchel. Under Flick, Bayern had won the league, cup and Champions League twice within two years. He left Bayern at his own request, apparently also because of internal quarrels.
He does not practice this criticism because the current national coach Flick is his friend, emphasized Matthäus. “Among other things, they couldn’t agree on players who fit in with FC Bayern. For example, Hansi wanted Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen, Hasan not,” explained Matthäus: “Flick embodied what FC Bayern was missing last time – and what he is now looking for again.” Like Kahn, Salihamidzic has to keep the German record champions in spite of their eleventh championship title leave series.
Matthäus recommends Dusan Vlahovic to FC Bayern
It was also a mistake not to have a center forward after top scorer Robert Lewandowski moved to FC Barcelona. The squad lacks the balance, but also “the Mia-san-Mia, the cohesion, the unconditional togetherness to be successful,” said Matthäus.
With a view to personnel changes, the former Bayern professional added: “A nine is needed, of course. Plus one or two mental players.” The 62-year-old named Serbian Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus Turin as a possible candidate for the center forward position. The 23-year-old scored ten goals in the past Serie A season, his market value is estimated at transfermarkt.de at 75 million euros.
