FC Bayern Basketball: Jason George suspected of doping

Actually, things were going really well for Jason George. Because the deployment times of the 21-year-old talent in FC Bayern’s squad in the Bundesliga and Euroleague remained manageable, the Munich team loaned him to the Chemnitz Niners for two seasons last December – not without extending the highly talented man’s contract until 2026. He should gain match practice in Chemnitz, a team in the secure midfield with a coach who has made a name for himself as a talent developer.

That’s how it happened, the 21-year-old shooting guard with the fine touch became an integral part of the Chemnitz rotation and even developed into a national player under Argentine coach Rodrigo Pastore. The 2.02 meter tall athlete had gone through the youth national teams of the German Basketball Association (DBB) and was called up by national coach Gordon Herbert at the end of February for the two World Cup qualifiers in Sweden and against Finland – both were won, George celebrated a thoroughly successful one Debut.

But now the career of the Munich player seems to be getting at least one severe setback, because as the Niners announced, George had “a conspicuous test result during the game and training controls of the National Anti-Doping Agency (Nada)”. Whereupon Nada initiated “an investigation into a possible violation of anti-doping regulations” in accordance with the statutes.

Until the result of the investigation, George is suspended from Bundesliga play by the DBB, which can take weeks

Jason George was temporarily suspended from playing in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) by the DBB and was absent from the most recent 87-80 home win by the Saxons against the Hamburg Towers last Saturday. The club is now awaiting the results of the anti-doping authority’s investigation, until which the presumption of innocence applies.

George was on loan for another season until the summer of 2024, especially since he was convincing in the Saxon squad and averaged 4.6 points in a total of 30 competitive games in the Bundesliga and Europe Cup. How things will continue is unclear, especially since such investigations can take weeks. The only thing that is certain at the moment is that George will no longer be used for Chemnitz, who are currently fighting for the playoffs as the bottom team.
