After a 1-1 draw against the youngsters of Standard – in the 9th round of the Relegation play-offs – fate struck. DThe Rouches also took the lead after a good 20 minutes thanks to a shot from Ilyes Ziani.
Yet Virton fought back unruly. It was often not pretty, but the end justified the means. Ten minutes before the end, Hakim Abdallah – with a striking header – scored another meaningless point for the visitors.
In the relegation group, SL16 FC is in the middle with 27 points, while Virton, now officially relegated, remains last with 22 points.
Virton launched his latest attempt to stay in the top flight on Thursday with an appeal against the license awarded to Lommel by the Belgian federation.
If the request is granted, Lommel’s license will still be revoked and it will automatically be relegated to the amateur league, so that Virton can remain in the top division.
