Xabi Alonso will remain at his post at Bayer Leverkusen, he confirms SPORTS1. The 41-year-old Spaniard was seen as the biggest candidate for the manager vacancy at Tottenham Hotspur, but now thanks for that. As a result, Arne Slot sees at least one competitor dropping out.

Alonso heard according to The Athletic along with Slot, Luis Enrique, Roberto De Zerbi and Rúben Amorim among the latest contenders for the vacancy at Tottenham. Daniel Levy, the chairman of the English, can now at least cross out Alonso’s name. “I will stay with Leverkusen,” says the Spanish trainer. “I am very happy at this club and with this team.”

The former player of Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Real Madrid, among others, was seen as the biggest candidate. “He has won the Champions League, played at top clubs and is a signboard,” said Valentijn Driessen more than two weeks ago at Inside today. “He is not impressed with Tottenham. Slot has never won anything (now the national title with Feyenoord, ed.), comes from Overijssel and has never really earned money.”

The chance that Tottenham will end up at Slot has therefore increased again with Alonso’s stay at Leverkusen. The Telegraph came with the news last Tuesday that the Feyenoord trainer can look forward to an improved contract proposal worth almost three and a half million euros per year. “Feyenoord’s offer does not seem huge by Premier League standards, but it shows the enormous dedication of the club,” said the British newspaper. Slot could reportedly earn at least twice the top offer from Feyenoord at Tottenham.
