Every football fan in Germany knows the silver trophy that the champion of the Bundesliga receives. If Dortmund or Bayern cheer on Saturday, their name will not be immortalized yet.
NAfter the big celebration, in a few weeks, the championship trophy will be driven to Bremen. The blacksmiths of the silver manufactory Koch and Bergfeld Corpus (K&B) will disassemble the bowl, as they have done every year for almost twenty years. They will clean the shell one by one and put it back together again. And when everything is prepared, Alfred Kromp, the master engraver, will clamp them in his machine and engrave 2023 BV BORUSSIA DORTMUND or 2023 FC BAYERN MUNICH on their outer silver ring.
Nobody knows yet who will be the German soccer champion. What is certain is that when he receives the bowl at around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, his name will not yet be immortalized on it. “We don’t have time,” says Roland Thölken, authorized signatory at K&B. In recent years, the manufactory often had enough advance notice to engrave the bowl before it was presented. Bayern were usually champions weeks before the end of the season. This year, football fans are looking forward to a heart-stopping final.
