Badminton | Badminton World Federation intervenes – “Spin service banned up to and including the 2024 Games”

Rindshoj used the service he developed for the first time at the Poland Open in March of this year. The shuttles were given such an effect that they just fell spinning and spinning just over the net with the shuttle side towards the opponents. Something for which there is no return. The normally intense rallies disappeared.

A temporary solution

The BWF quickly intervened. On May 12, a new rule was added to the rule book: “The server must serve the shuttle without adding extra spin”. A rule that would last until May 29. In this way, the union gave itself some more time to come up with a real ‘solution’.

Influencing the Games

On the last day of that temporary rule, the BWF issued a new statement: “After seeking advice from the badminton community, the BWF Board believes it is best to exclude the ‘spin service’ for a further 15 months to if not to influence too much the qualifications of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Games themselves.”

This gives more players more time to master the service and therefore also to work on a return during training. Something that hasn’t been so easy lately, according to Selena Piek. “We have all practiced it at Papendal, but no one has actually managed to master it. It is an incredibly complex service. You first have to throw the shuttle away from you with a kind of spin movement with your middle finger, to get it than hit against the grain with your racket,” the two-time Olympian told the NOS.
