Back and neck problems: In 90 percent of the cases, everyone can help themselves

WELT: Mr Poeck, what are the most common causes of back, shoulder and neck pain?

Dr. Peter Poeckh: One must distinguish between organic causes and functional causes. Organic causes are, for example, a herniated disc, osteoporosis, narrowing of the spine, etc. Something a doctor would see on an X-ray or MRI image. Functional complaints, on the other hand, are not necessarily visible in these pictures, they are due to problems in the muscular-fascial area and are caused by tension, muscular imbalances and adhesions in the connective tissue. And do you know what the good news is? That in 90 percent of the cases, both on the back and in the shoulder and neck area, it is precisely these functional causes that trigger these complaints. That means everyone can do something about it. With movements and exercises.

WELT: How exactly can you help yourself?
