ATP Masters Rome: Holger Rune beats Casper Ruud and reaches the final against Daniil Medvedev

“I told myself that I had to play aggressively and enjoy it, and I did that. That was the key to the comeback,” explained Holger Rune after the game.

At the end of 2022, the youngster triumphed in the final of the Masters in Paris against Novak Djokovic, about a month ago he had to admit defeat in three sets in the final by Monte-Carlo Andrey Rublev.

In the Rome final, Rune faces either Russia’s Daniil Medvedev or Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Medvedev defeated Olympic champion Alexander Zverev in the round of 16 in the Italian capital and Yannick Hanfmann in the quarterfinals.

Rune climbs the world rankings

With his entry into the final of the eternal city, Rune will improve in the new world rankings from sixth place starting Monday. Ruud can be ousted from fourth place by Tsitsipas if he defeats Medvedev.

The Norwegian has to wait for his second final entry at a Masters after Miami 2022. In return, he made it into the finals of the French Open, the US Open and the ATP Finals in Turin, where he lost out against Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Djokovic.

Medvedev throws Tsitsipas out

The second semi-final between Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas had to be interrupted due to rain in the first set. The Russian had the better end for himself, who took the sets with late breaks.

After a playing time of one hour and 47 minutes, Medvedev used his first match point.
