Menorcan Players Shine at Spanish Senior Championship in Galicia

Last weekend, a new edition of the Spanish Senior Championship was held in the Galician town of A Estrada, bringing together no less than 329 players from all over the country, which is why all categories had to be played by elimination. Directly, if you lost a game they sent you home.

Eight Menorcans defied the airlines and landed in Galicia, but not before suffering two delays in their flights, things that happen in the run-up to the championships for the islanders. On Friday morning they were ready to face their respective rivals in their different categories.

Pep Costa third in Spain in individual category B2

The CB Maó couple formed by Marina Juanico and Ana Capo repeated the bronze medal as they did in the Spanish Senior Championship two years ago in Gijón, this time the Menorcans took advantage of their status as number 1 seeds to be able to compete for a medal again . In the semifinals they lost their match against Marina Rodríguez and Angela Soto from Valladolid by 21-13 21-13.

Apart from the two medals already mentioned, the Menorcans managed to qualify for three quarterfinals. Toni Barceló won his first matches in men’s singles B1, but could do nothing against the number 1 seed Ángel Rodríguez losing by two sets to zero. Toni himself also reached the same round with his teammate David Febrer, both from CB Maó, losing against David Ríos and Jorge Serres by a tight 21-19, 21-17.
