The municipal council has approved the definitive project for the functional, seismic and plant adaptation of the sports hall “G. Ventura” in Piazza Palio.
In view of the XX edition of the Mediterranean Games, which will be hosted in Taranto in 2026, the Municipality of Lecce has given the organizing committee the full availability of the city’s sports facilities including the municipal stadium E. Giardiniero and the Palazzetto dello Sport G. Ventura for the period of the event.
The interventions are aimed at guaranteeing the reception of athletes and international guests and the conduct of sporting competitions, but will also concern the surrounding areas, access roads, parking lots and pertinent areas.
The PalaVentura, named after Germano Ventura, patron of the Lecce basketball team who played for years in the national championships, has a capacity of 1300 seats, is mainly intended for the game of volleyball and basketball (provincial, regional and even national competitive championships) and usually hosts sporting events of various kinds. Last in chronological order is the stage of the Italian Paralympic Bocce Championship. From a structural point of view, despite the interventions made in recent years (including the replacement of the parquet and the arrangement of the roof), it requires a general and coordinated redevelopment intervention.
Specifically, with this adjustment project, of the total amount of 2.720.000 euro, the demolition of part of the existing steps is planned to create the area intended for benches (particularly for playing basketball). The current situation, in fact, involves placing the benches on part of the perimeter bands of the playing field. In anticipation of the possibility of being able to host table tennis competitions, the sports activity room can be equipped to contain up to 9 playing fields and, moreover, an additional field for warm-up and training can be identified in an adjacent room.
The other planned interventions are the replacement of the current railings of the steps, so as to make them suitable for the provisions of current regulations, the arrangement and protection with bumper nets of the suspension arms of the current lighting lamps in the sports area which will all be replaced with LED-powered lamps, the redevelopment and energy efficiency of the building, the improvement of the tightness of the building envelope, both as regards the elimination of rainwater infiltration phenomena from the roof of the sports hall, and the poor thermal resistance of the external fixtures, interventions which, together with the improvement of the efficiency of the heating and ventilation machines, will lead to a significant reduction in energy consumption. Finally, the verification of the current structural situation of the sports complex is envisaged, with reference to the seismic regulations in force, and the restructuring and recovery intervention on some structural elements that appear evidently degraded. In fact, various external arrangement works are planned along the entire perimeter of the arena for easy and safe access to the structure for both athletes and employees and spectators and external spaces will be set up for advertising and merchandising.
